Report Summary:

Paraffin wax is a white or colorless soft solid derivable from petroleum, coal or oil shale, which consists of a mixture of hydrocarbon molecules containing between twenty and forty carbon atoms. It is solid at room temperature and begins to melt above approximately 37 C (99 F); its boiling point is >370 C (698 F). Common applications for paraffin wax include lubrication, electrical insulation, and candles. It is distinct from kerosene, another petroleum product that is sometimes called paraffin. Liquid paraffin is a mixture of hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. Liquid paraffin is a colorless, clear, and viscous liquid having almost no fluorescence. It is odorless and tasteless. Liquid paraffin is considered to have a limited usefulness as an occasional laxative, but is unsuitable for regular use as it can seep from the anus and cause irritation; it can interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins; it can be absorbed into the intestinal wall and may cause foreign-body granulamatous reactions; and if it enters the lungs it can cause lipoid pneumonia. Liquid paraffin is also used in combination with magnesium as an osmotic laxative, sold under the trade name Mil-Par (among others).
